What is Sports Massage?

Sports massage is a form of advanced soft tissue therapy that targets specific muscle groups, connective tissues, and joints. It’s not just for athletes—this treatment is for anyone who experiences muscular fatigue, repetitive strain, or reduced mobility.

Whether you’re preparing for an event, recovering from exertion, or managing chronic tightness, James uses a combination of deep tissue techniques, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, and assisted stretching to improve circulation, ease restrictions, and support your body’s repair processes.

What to Expect From Your Appointment

From the moment you arrive, the focus is on you—your body, your goals, and your recovery.

Your appointment will begin with a short consultation to discuss your physical history, lifestyle demands, areas of discomfort, and your treatment goals. James will conduct a brief postural or movement assessment if needed, to tailor the massage to your current needs.

You’ll be asked to undress to your comfort level and lie on the massage couch—towels are used throughout to ensure modesty and warmth. The treatment may include deep tissue worktrigger point releasemyofascial techniques, and assisted stretching, all applied with a responsive, intuitive touch and clear communication.

Whether you’re seeking release from chronic tension, recovery from intense training, or preparation for an event, James will adapt the session in real time—ensuring pressure, technique, and focus are exactly right for your body.

After your massage, you’ll be offered advice on aftercare, hydration, and simple movement or stretches to support your recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sports Massage painful?
Sports massage can involve deeper pressure and focused work on tight or congested tissues. Some discomfort is normal during trigger point release or deep work, but James always works within your comfort zone and encourages open feedback throughout.

What should I wear?
Wear loose, comfortable clothing. You’ll be asked to undress to your comfort level for the treatment, depending on the area being worked on. Towels are always used to preserve modesty, and you are never asked to remove more than you’re comfortable with.

How long is the session?
You can book for 60, 90, or 120 minutes. The longer sessions allow for more in-depth work across multiple regions or for clients requiring both assessment and recovery planning.

Do I need to be an athlete to benefit?
Not at all. Sports massage is for anyone experiencing physical tension, fatigue, restricted movement, or muscular discomfort. Office workers, tradesmen, new dads, gym-goers—if your body’s under pressure, this treatment can help.

Will I feel sore afterwards?
Some clients experience mild soreness for 24–48 hours after deep tissue work—similar to post-exercise stiffness. This is entirely normal and part of the body’s natural repair process. Drinking water and gentle movement will help ease it.

Can I return to training after the session?
Depending on the depth and intensity of the work, you may be advised to rest for a day before resuming training. For pre-event massage, James will adjust his technique to energise the muscles rather than fatigue them.

Is this treatment suitable after injury or surgery?
Yes, provided sufficient healing time has passed. Please bring details of your diagnosis or physiotherapy advice, and James will adapt accordingly. If in doubt, consult your GP or specialist before booking.
